Sweet, Tangy Barbecue - Without the Nightshades

This sauce is a direct replacement for traditional barbecue sauces, which are basically a mix of ketchup and sugar. This nightshade-free recipe can be brushed on meat or served with your favourite barbecued dishes.

Ingredients:

2 cups plums, pitted and roughly chopped

1 cup apple cider vinegar

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup honey

2 cloves of garlic, minced

1 onion, diced

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Smoked salt, to taste

Method:

In a medium saucepan, combine the plums, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, garlic, and onion.

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.Reduce the heat to low and simmer the sauce, stirring occasionally, until the plums are very soft and the sauce has thickened, about 30 minutes.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the sauce cool slightly.Using an immersion blender, or transfer to a regular blender, puree the sauce until smooth.

Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and smoked salt, to taste.

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.Allow the sauce to cool completely before using or storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
